About our service
We provide a trained Carer Support Worker to a family and they will provide whatever support is required to relieve the Carer of their caring responsibilities which can range from emotional support and assistance through to more specialised tasks such as specialist feeding and administering medication. The service we provide enables Carers to continue caring for as long as they wish or are able to do so.
Our support is individually tailored to meet the needs of each family and is totally flexible and adaptable around their needs. Individual care plans are agreed between Crossroads, the Carer and the person with care needs.
This service works closely with, and alongside existing health, social services and voluntary services, thereby providing an additional element in a total care package for the individual family. Our services to Carers are provided 365 days a year and each service area has its own on-call service.
We deliver these service across three Greater Manchester areas of Salford, Trafford and Stockport.
Who is a Carer?
A Carer is someone who provides unpaid care by looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member, friend or partner.
A Carers life is often restricted by the need to be on call 24 hours a day because the person they look after cannot be safely left alone for long periods. Carers are often under a great deal of physical and emotional strain through the demanding work of caring for someone heavily dependent upon them. They might be trying to hold down a paid job as well, and have other family commitments.
How many people are Carers?
The latest figures on Carers are from the 2001 Census. This showed that there are nearly 6 million carers in the UK. This is 10% of the total population, or approximately 12% of the adult population. There are 1.9 million people caring for more than 20 hours per week and 1.25 million care for more than 50 hours per week.
